@jonx96 , just get a new 1, me & a couple buddy's have bought used 3.09's that for 1 reason or another didn't last long so we ended up buying new one's & haven't had issues for a while with new.
You can put all your suspension & spindle stuff back together & slide the axles in when you put the new diff back in at the same time.
I told him since it is already apart to put the rear in first. I know with 2 of us doing mine you still had to tilt the diff to get them in. On a lift pretty easy but on your back makes it much harder. Or do a combo of getting the rear close then put the axles in. It is already tore apart so use that as your advantage

or you get ahead putting it back together, With the diff out you can slide in 1 axle at a time, easy. I do it on jack stands & you have to get under there anyway to do the diff.

Not a bad price. Not long ago (this year) I was seeing them closer to $700. I did a search and most are close to $1000. Just another thing that has gone up

I hope I have one more test day next weekend but right now I'm leaning on putting the stock one back in. The 3.09's cost me 2k with spinning at 2 races where I lost my 1k bounty this year. My 60 ft only picked up .01. My best pass is only .05 better. I did get mine at a good price but was told they have gear whine which they do. At some mph they are pretty loud. Doesn't help with the braces and aluminum ds I put in I'm sure

but the 3.09 takes stress on drive line too, moving a heavy car, ie. trans, axles, ds & diff

if you had 20lbs of boost then the 2.62 would be better

With the 4.71 first gear ratio in the A8, the torque multiplier with the 2.62 is pretty much ok for that weight. I doubt if there is much less stress on the drivetrain with the 3.09.

and has 15' convertion & a lot more, the faster you go the more you have to do.
He's also blown his engine & has a ton of money in it.
He bought a RE now that he's keeping mild & having fun with it.

it's more than with a 2.62 no matter what
It's right at 1/2 a rotation of the ring gear

Then if he leaves in 2nd gear with the 3.09, he is putting way more stress on the drivetrain than leaving in first with a 2.62. The multiplication factor is only 9.7:1 compared to 12.3:1. With the kind of horsepower we are talking about in these supercharged cars, it’s a lot of stress period. The 60’ is really all about traction and how hard you can leave with no spin. I wonder what stall speed Z is running?

Agreed, but as far as stress I was talking about Jon's or our cars not Z's car which is whole other animal. I was just pointing out that Z runs or did run a 3.09.

I would think you want a taller tire with the 3.09?

if they are close I'm running 2.62. If I run a 10.50 next week the 3.09 are staying. I drive the car more then I race it so there needs to be something there for changing.

if running 3.09's with 315 why not stay with 2.62 and 305's? The 305's are 10 lbs lighter

Ron tested both tires and the 305's were quicker
