Thats awesome. Now one rare running Ford can pull home 2 dead Fords at once.

It could probably pull a small caravan on lightning’s behind it too 😂

I can’t say I’ve ever towed a real heavy trailer. Nothing over probably 6000-7000 lbs gross but how is pulling 40000 lbs with a truck that weighs what, maybe 8000-9000 lbs even safe? Seems they need to leave this to the big rigs. Maybe just for chest thumping?

The new Fords definitely outpower the Rams.

Well, a tractor (as in tractor trailer) doesn't weigh all that much, about 15 to 20K, and they obviously pull 80K all day long.
So basically both the tow vehicle and trailer weigh about twice as much as the Furd pulling 40K.

But the sad part is that many believe those somewhat unrealistic J2807 ratings. Which is why you see so many towing with 1/2-tons and SUVs.

I'm all for the longest and heaviest tow vehicle possible, pulling lighter loads. So far my Ram 3500 with a 172" wheelbase (weight about 9,500 lbs.) has only pulled up to 25K. Even with a total weight of only 39,000 lbs., I'm glad the trailer has disc brakes.

Unlike the J2807 tests, I don't need to go all that fast up hills, but sure like being able to go around curves and to stop.
.

I figured you’d educate me with all the stuff you’ve towed. 👍

For someone who has never towed commercially, I probably have towed more than most. And have learned a few things along the way.

It has ranged from quite a bit of flat towing the Jeep early on, to pulling doubles with the Peterbilt, and a lot in between.
I can only guess, but it has to be at least 300,000 miles so far, possibly closer to 400,000.
But I've never towed a travel trailer on public roads.

My take on it these days is based on those miles. For the tow vehicle, it should be heavy and have a long wheelbase.
With trailers there's much more to it. While I have several of them, if at all possible I avoid bumper pulls. And especially single axle trailers. They're fine on the property, not so much on public roads, I think.

With enclosed trailers (bumper pulls) a weight distributing hitch and active sway control can be worth its weight in gold.
I'm also a big fan of gooseneck trailers over recreational style 5th wheels, for a number of reasons. Although, I'd take an RV 5th wheel over a bumper pull any day (then convert it to a gooseneck hitch asap).

As you can probably imagine by now, I cringe whenever DGatzby mentions trailering his Challenger behind an SUV. And on a open trailer at that. Such a beautiful car deserves a real tow vehicle and ideally also an enclosed trailer.

I am currently looking at a Ford to replace my 03 Silverado. I wanted a Ram but it looks like all the 23 1500's will be eTorque only (unless you go diesel) and I'll pass on that. The Ram 2500's are EXPENSIVE!

I have been looking at F150's and F250's and you can get a lot for your money with the F150's. The F250 are a great deal too, especially since the base engine is the 7.3L (6.8 is not offered at this time). The one funny thing was when I went to put heated seats in the F250 it forced me into about $7200 in bundled option packages!!! So I'm looking at only the F150!

I'm very happy with my F150. It's an XLT that came with a bunch of other options. The only option I wouldn't have gotten if I had ordered the truck is that giant sunroof, I'm not much of a sunroof person. Althought, it will come in very handy for shooting out of during the zombie apocalypse.

I have the 5.0 and it runs very well. Runs really nice in sport mode.

I recommend getting one with:
- 36 gal gas tank
- 3.73 gears
- center console work surface (I didn't think this would be a big deal until I used it a few times) It gives plenty of room for a pit beef sandwich, fries and
drink
- 12 inch center display (didn't think I would like it until I had it, well worth the money)
- B&O sound system is worth the money over the stock system.
- Tail gate step well worth the money

I went out to Tennessee to get mine. I got a good enough deal to make it worth the trip.

I did use an F-150 to pull my 16' enclosed trailer once, during the bi-weekly 1,000-mile commute period from L.A. to here.

Of course I feared that the V6 wouldn't be up for the task, turbo or not. It was, and the little 1/2-ton handled the load fine (using weight distribution, of course).

What I didn't expect was that the V6 would use quite a bit more gas than my normal ride, a Ram 2500 gasser. Also, once here and looking at the underpinnings of that 1/2-ton, I couldn't help but wonder how long it would last if used for towing.
That F-150 rear axle was about half the size of my 2500's, and most everything else underneath was quite dinky, too.

But in retrospect, I shouldn't have been surprised. It's much like that the Pete got about the same mileage as my current diesel 3500, pulling similar weights. A small engine working hard can easily use more fuel than a larger one that's just loafing along.

Use an F-150 (or any 1/2-ton) as the car with a bed that it is and it'll be fine.

LOL on the eating surface!!! I'm planning to pass on that! I have my wife to hold my food!

I hate sunroofs! (And skylights!!! Let's take a perfectly good roof and put holes in it!)

I looked at the step, yes it is a great feature (I'm old), but I figured I could add it later cheaper.

36gal tank, extra $445 to hold an extra what, 10-12gal? I can't drive that long without a pit stop so I thought I'd pass on it.

3.73 locking, no brainer.

My wife tows a 6-7klb horse trailer short distances, Silverado 1500 has worked fine so I think we are ok staying with the 1/2T.

I'm old so I like the idea of a 1/2T car that can also do light duty work!

My last F150 was that twin turbo ecoboost. I didn't see much "eco" in it at all. I'd get between 15-17 mpg out of it. My new F150 with the 5.0 gets about the same, however, the new truck is lifted, has bigger tires, and steeper gears than the previous one. I'd take the 5.0 over the Ecoboost any day of the week.

The regular tank is 23 gal. After having the 36 gal tank, I wouldn't go back to the smaller one, but that's just personal preference.
My previuos F150 had the 23 gal tank and I swapped it out for the 36 gal one.

An extra nice thing about the Fords is that you can easily get into the various software and make changes. I just made a few changes on mine about 2 weeks ago. It was nice being able to get in there and turn off a bunch of things I found to be a nuisance.

This is where I got mine. They were fantastic to deal with and were about 10 minutes away from the Chattanooga airport.

They were also willing to give me X-Plan pricing, which I had problems with other dealerships in my home area not wanting to give any discounts.
