In my opinion it's the transmission.that makes the difference. It's always in the right gear for the situation.

Good point. I overlooked that fact that if it's a stick shift it won't slow down - at least not to below idle - so if in Fourth or Fifth, the car will still go pretty fast.
Especially if the idle is at 2,000 rpm.

OH.... you mean literally coasting on the trans when you let off. My experience is this, if the car "thinks" based on how I'm driving (cruising) it will generally stay in a high gear and not pull a semi / dynamic braking thing. It'll coast easily. However, if I've been launching or pulling near 1 g corners and like that, when I let off, it stays in a lower gear (preparatory to get nailed again) for a while and that lower gear can act as a major brake; to maintain speed have to keep the throttle attended.

Yeaaa, I know, I know. A bit stressed out right now because of the drive home today. Usually my car does decent in the snow, but my tires need replacing and I can't afford it right now.

Was headed home tonight, got squirrelly on the snow and nearly hit oncoming traffic. Definitely glad I have good reaction time, but it was little bit jarring. Had the car almost full lock trying to get her straight again.
