This how to involves removing the front fascia.

Attached is a pdf on how to remove the front fascia.

Time required: 2 hours (would have been less, if I would have removed the fascia, to begin with.).

CAUTION: DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS PART OF THE BULB ASSEMBLY.

Tools needed:

Metal trim removal tool (no plastic trim tools, for this job).

10mm wrench

8mm socket

Whatever size lug socket you need

Torque wrench

Breaker bar

6" extension

Parts needed:

2 replacement D3S HID capsules (bulbs)

I used OSRAM 66340HBI, 35 watt, 4500K.

Lift front end of car, on jack stands, using wheel chocks, on a rear tire:

Remove two front wheels:

Pull back front half of each fender liner:

Where the fascia meets the fender, there are 2 10mm head bolts, that need to be removed, from behind the fender liner. The upper one is an excercise in patience.

Where the upper fascia meets the fender, in the engine compartment, remove one 10mm head bolt.

Remove all bolts under the leading edge of the fascia (like you were doing an oil change).

Unplug both side markers. I found that a little spritz of liquid wrench silicone spray made them slip right off.

Remove the fascia:

Remove two 10mm head bolts top & bottom of the headlight &, remove from the car.

Remove the plastic HID cover, on the back of each headlight:

Remove the bulbs, from the housing. To do this, turn the white retainer, counterclockwise (not the bulb assembly):

Here's what the bulbs look like, with the white locking ring:

The white plastic retainer slips off the old bulb and back on to the new one. Once on the new bulb, looking down on it, rotate it clockwise, until it stops.

DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS BULB!!!

install the bulb into the headlight housing and twist the white retainer clockwise, while holding the back of the bulb (the silver box (igniter)).

For reference, here are pictures of the balasts:

Driver side (left):

Passenger side (right):

Install the headlights and reverse the order of disassembly.

Bookmarked for Wiki consideration! :)

A reminder, Wiki entries need to be "vetted" by the membership, so if you feel like this is a worthy entry, speak up! If you feel like this needs to be revised in some way, say so, nicely...
