I will never understand how, with the engines mounted that far out on the wings, the bird can fly on one engine.

'Understand, but it comes down to the careful and judicious use of the flight-controls (and trim).

We were on a flight into Tampa years ago. The plane blew an engine about 30 minutes out.

No other passengers seemed to notice as the flight crew was telling everyone to stow their stuff under the seat, close the trays and securely fasten seat belts, etc.

The pilot brought it in virtually sticking 1 wing with a hard turn and dropped onto the runway. Nobody seemed to even notice.

As we were getting off the captain was standing there and I told him that it was a great job getting it in so smoothly. He just smiled and gave me thumbs up.

The other passengers never even knew what was going on.

And most importantly keeping your airspeed above blue line so that the flight controls have enough authority to maintain controlled flight. Let the airspeed drop below Vmc and you will instantly depart controlled flight. If you catch a Vmc rollover right away it is recoverable by chopping power on the good engine and getting the nose down, but you are then trading altitude for airspeed which when low may not be an option. Link is an example of what happens during an engine out when the speed drops below Vmc.

Even the big ones can fall even with 8 engines at full power, once they get knife edge wings loose lift and with no altitude for recovery it’s all over quick
:( God Bless them

The captain on that flight, Bud Holland was known to be a real cowboy risk taker behind the controls. There were many other times he nearly crashed a B-52 including clearing at mountain top by only 3 feet at very high speed. There were guys that smartly refused to fly with him. If I recall correctly he was only 2 knots below stall speed at that bank angle, but it was more than enough to seal their fate.

A visual on how bank angle increases stall speed.
