The 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible is one of the rarest and most desirable muscle cars, the kind that's almost guaranteed to start a bidding war at any auction. So it will be interesting to see how much this one sells for when it crosses the block at Mecum's auction in Indianapolis, Indiana, running May 14-22.

The Plymouth Barracuda (performance versions got 'Cuda nomenclature beginning in 1970) was the brand's competitor to the Ford Mustang, meaning entry-level versions were priced affordably, and produced in large numbers. However, few cars got the 426-cubic-inch Hemi V-8 engine. Even fewer were convertibles.

Just 12 Hemi 'Cuda Convertibles were built for the 1971 model year, including seven for the United States and five for export, according to the listing. In addition, this is one of only three cars equipped with the factory A833 4-speed manual transmission, and it's the only 1971 Hemi 'Cuda Convertible painted Winchester Gray.

Given the two motors, the 426 versus the 440 Sixpack, I'd take the 440.

(But of course, I'd never turn down the 426)

This should be a 2 or 3 million car easy, more wouldn't surprise me. Would you even drive it?

Do they even put salt on the roads in Colorado now? They really didn't when I lived there

For the street its hard to beat the 440, but the power potential of the Hemi far exceeds the wedge in race tune.
I always liked my 340 for handling and then went to a 440 for ET's in the quarter.

but the Hellcat surpasses both of those - and it's an M6!!!

That's the dream car there. Easily a $3MM car I would suspect
I thought I saw one go across Barrett Jackson recently for around $2million - but I was paying more attention to the car than the price - I think that car (B5 blue 71 Hemi 4sp Cuda) has changed hands a few times in the last few years...

The gun-metal gray was new for ‘71, this is the only hemi Challenger in that color that they built that year. This car was an unrestored original and a friend of my dads owned it for many years but recently sold it for I believe 2.5 million to the heir of the Pabst Blue Ribbon beer family.

I thought my ‘06 300C SRT8 in silver steel looked great and was a similar color.

I had an '84 Daytona Turbo in what they called Gun Metal Blue at the time, it was very similar to that '71, but a tad darker as I recall.
Had to sell it when I moved to FL in '88, a move I've always regretted !

I had a couple buddies ( in the Air Force at the time) that purchased the Shelby Chargers (turbo I believe) and another that had the Daytona... I liked the cars but couldnt afford one on an E2 salary... (lol)

I was an E2 during the beginning of the Reagan years, being an E2 prior to that and trying to do ANYTHING on an E2 salary was nothing short of futile...

My brother had one of those Shelby's in B5, it had the same 2.2L turbo engine as the Daytona - a fast little sucker !
