damn, entire valve or just the seat? either a retainer broke/not properly factory installed, or the seat popped out, not pressed in properly. Valve seats can drop in older motors due to age and repeated overheating over time, but this has to be a bad factory assembly.

Well, most of the valve. Still don't know if it's a keeper or broken valve stem, but apparently most of the valve dropped.

How much depreciation loss can you expect on 10 months of use? I'd imagine you'll be looking at a pro-rated figure. You'll be better off taking the new engine and demanding an extended warranty as a show of good faith.

This is the first one that I've heard of having a valve problem not caused by a tuning issue. It seems to be a one-off problem. I like @motorhead 's advice - extended warranty. Your chances of success on a buy-back are pretty slim, IMO.

Man that's a new one on me. We'd hear of something like this on the previous platform 6.1 engines from time to time due to heat, etc but not these. Had to be an issue during assembly I'd think.

I'd agree with taking the new motor and getting a bumper to bumper extension on the warranty. I've got a Gen 6 Camaro that has had a ton of problems from active exhaust valve rattles to the torque converter going out. I challenged GM to buy it back and let them negotiate an extended warranty, I think they gave me a 6 year platinum if memory serves.

I just put a new motor in my Hellcat (blew the first one up and replaced with a Demon/RE engine) and the job really isn't that big of a deal for an experienced tech. The guy that helped me had it done in a matter of hours without a scratch on anything.

Assuming you still like the car...I would shoot for new motor and extended warranty. Awful situation.

Yeah, I'm not getting getting rid of the car just because the engine had a failed part. They'll pop a new engine in there and you'll be back in business.

Well I hate this for you
But... Demon owners have experienced headgaskets for many reasons, but all that I know of were warranty. Those same cars are drag racing right beside me.... with extended warranties and other things that dodge gave them for their time.

just saying.... get a new motor..then request a 100k drivetrain or bumper to bumper no year limit.

My 2016 had a wrist pin issue #7. I wanted a new engine, got a new piston instead. Issue started at 800 miles, I have 13,000 miles now. Car runs great, so it worked out. I wish, I would have thought of getting them to give me an extended warranty with it!

Dodge wants pics of the air box, pics of the front of the crank/pulley and pics with the valve cover(s) removed plus any borescope pics of the cylinder before they will order a new engine. Makes sense tho. Still don't know why the valve dropped. Pics with the valve cover removed should provide more info, like a broken valve spring or some other reason for a valve to drop.

Because I ordered the car, am leaning toward replacing the engine and just motoring down the road and putting this whole issue behind me. Will also try to negotiate additional warranty per the many suggestions here, so thanks to everyone for taking the time to share your thoughts. Much appreciated.

Tell me more about this. Mine also failed on cylinder 7.

If the buy back is easy, just do that and start over. If they make it a pain to do a buyback get a new engine and then like others have said argue depreciation loss/extended warranty coverage. You will now have a vehicle that doesn't have it's original engine (that matters to some people). Did the dealer give you an ETA on repair time? I'd imagine it's going to take awhile until it's back up and running again. I'd fight for as many things as you can get.

My lady went threw 2 years of issues with her last Subaru (multiple electrical issues). She barely got to drive it because it was at the dealer so much. While she didn't get a buy out "officially" the dealer and Subaru between them "bought" it back as long as she was willing to get a new Subaru from them. They kept the payments the same, gave her a killer interest rate, free 8 year bumper to bumper warranty, plus tons of other extras at their cost or free. She was kind and had patience, and in turn the dealer/Subaru was very generous with what they offered back. Point being I'm sure this would be frustrating, I know I'd be upset, but take a deep breath and push threw it. I find being kind to people usually gets me farther than being an ass.

I'm sure it will all work out for you. Good luck!

No ETA yet since they can't order the new engine yet.

I always treat people respectfully according to the Golden Rule. That works best always!

Dodge wants pics of the air box,
I am curious if they are looking for an aftermarket CAI to possibly question a tune or a more sinister reason to question the engine replacement.

That and a pic of the front of the crankshaft to make sure it wasn't pinned. But as the OP said, the car was bone stock with low miles. Weird....you'd think it would have failed much quicker if it were assembled improperly. Almost seems like the valve itself failed and broke....more of a material issue maybe? I wonder if these failed engines go back to FCA for an autopsy, or does FCA just direct the dealer to junk them??

They go back to the WPC for evaluation
